The antidote to half-heartedness.
Every week contains 10,080 minutes. And every week, we 'spend' all of them—on something.
Our lives are fully committed. There's no way to opt out. An audit of our calendars and our bank accounts would show our priorities.
When Joshua gives his "final words" to the Israelites, he calls them to recommit to their covenant with God (read Joshua 24). He argues with them: God has kept his promises. God has delivered us. In response to his grace, it is only sensible for us to trust and obey God.
Then Joshua says:
"Therefore, fear the LORD and worship him in sincerity and truth. Get rid of the gods your ancestors worshiped beyond the Euphrates River and in Egypt, and worship the LORD. But if it doesn't please you to worship the LORD, choose for yourselves today: Which will you worship—the gods your ancestors worshiped beyond the Euphrates River or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living? As for me and my family, we will worship the LORD" (Joshua 24:14-15).
**God's grace motivates our whole-hearted worship.**
After all, who would want to worship defeated gods? No. Joshua sets himself as an example: my family and I are going to worship the Lord!
Joshua's message takes on greater force when we read it in light of Jesus. Jesus has defeated sin, death, and Satan. He is risen and ascended. He is the King of kings and the Lord of lords. (Consider Ephesians 1:20-23). He is worthy of our trust and obedience.
So who will you serve with your 10,080 minutes this week?
When the Israelites waffled between serving YHWH and serving Baal, they experienced disaster. Because God is life, to give our loyalty to anyone else is to choose death.
As for me and my family, we will worship the LORD."
If someone audited your calendar and bank account, what would they say your priorities are?
What 'gods' compete for your worship and attention?
What would it look like to serve the Lord with your 10,080 minutes this week?
Review your calendar from last week. How much time did you spend pursuing God's mission vs. other priorities?
Like Joshua, make a declaration: 'As for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.' Write it down and post it somewhere visible.
