Mission requires action.
I like safety. I like comfort. I like to take it easy.
But Jesus taught his disciples that he would be with them as they go.
The Great Commission passage is such an intimate and authoritative passage! Jesus claims to have all authority and to always be with his disciples.
**We are not crushed by his command.**
Why? Because we know he cares for us. He is with us! Treasure this reality—God is with you, right now, in this moment, because he delights in you!
**Nor are we coddled.**
Why? Because we are challenged and invited into the privilege of joining God in his uncommon pursuit. It's a bold mission... and we get to be part of it!
To embrace God's mission, at some point, requires that we go. This might mean relocating overseas to an unreached people group. But it also might mean asking God to show you where he has already gone.
What is God already stirring up in your neighborhood? At your workplace? Among your family?
If we think that God is not already at work around us, then it discourages us from starting the conversation or asking the question. But if we believe the mission is God's idea and that God is overseeing it and that God is inviting us to be involved, then we are encouraged to go.
What does this look like? Stadiums filled to hear your voice? Maybe. But in my experience, it adds up to a lot of little conversations. For instance, I was recently asked to share a short devotional at a family gathering. I shared how the baptism we had just witnessed was a reminder that life has a purpose.
It was a spiritually mixed group, so I felt unsure if this was the right approach. Then I had a conversation with someone who confided to me that their life seems to lack any purpose. I was touched and heartbroken by their vulnerability. It's a conversation we might never have had if I hadn't boldly clarified the meaning of a baptism. The point is, we don't know how God is already at work in the people around us until we step out in faith.
The eleven disciples traveled to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had directed them. When they saw him, they worshiped, but some doubted. Jesus came near and said to them, "All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth. Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age."
Where might God already be at work around you—in your neighborhood, workplace, or family?
What holds you back from 'going'? Fear? Comfort? Uncertainty?
What small step of faith could you take this week?
Where is one place God might be calling you to 'go' this week? Write it down and commit to showing up.
This week, start one spiritual conversation with someone. It doesn't have to be a full gospel presentation—just be curious about where God might be at work in their life.
