A simple framework for getting transformational insights from any Bible passage.
In this lesson, I will introduce you to the 1-1-1 Bible study method.
It's very simple, but it still takes hard work.
The 1-1-1 method is a way of getting to transformational insights with any Bible verses.
First, you read a specific section of the Scriptures. Then, you ask God for wisdom to help you understand it. As you study the passage with the aid of commentaries and your community, your goal is to summarize three key points.
Here's the template:
Here's an example:
Bible verses: Psalm 1
A few caveats:
First, you could study the exact same passage ten times and come up with different answers each time. God's word is rich, complex, and multi-faceted.
Second, the goal is simplicity on the far side of complexity. Often, our initial attempts to summarize God's word are scratching the surface. But as we meditate on each section, discuss it with friends, and learn more about the original context of the passage, we can make progress.
Third, you could write a Ph.D. on any verse of the Bible. But for daily living, the 1-1-1 method is a practical way to keep making progress in your walk with God.
The beauty of this method is that it takes you from reading to understanding to responding to worshiping - all in three short sentences. It's simple enough to do in a few minutes but powerful enough to transform your life over time.
What do you think are the benefits of summarizing a Bible passage in just three sentences (truth, response, worship)?
Why might you come up with different 1-1-1 summaries studying the same passage multiple times?
Can you think of a Bible verse that has grown deeper in meaning for you over time? What new insights did you gain?
Try the 1-1-1 method right now with Psalm 1. Read it, then write: 1) One truth you see, 2) One way you'll respond, 3) One prayer of worship.
Pick a short Bible passage to study tomorrow using this method. Write down which passage you've chosen.
