Jesus' resurrection is why we have hope beyond the grave
Our utopian dreams keep getting thwarted by economic turmoil, political deadlocks, social inequities, and the tragedy of war. Every time it seems like we are making progress towards world peace, there's a reversal that takes us in the direction of chaos.
That's one reason we feel connected to the first Advent. Politically, the Jewish people were under the oppressive rule of Rome. The poor, disabled, and weak had little social safety net; they suffered in the margins. Each year depended upon the success of the crops, which could be ruined by bad weather, a greedy tax collector, or a sick animal. Their spiritual leaders took advantage of their need for God to rob them blind at the Temple.
What will solve our problems? Technology? Education? Political revolution?
As Christians, we're called to love our neighbor and seek the restoration of our communities. But we know that our capacity is limited; it's easier to tear down than to build up; evil is often lurking beyond our sight.
When John the Baptist was born, his father Zechariah, a prophet, stated, "Because of our God's merciful compassion, the dawn from on high will visit us to shine on those who live in darkness and the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace" (Luke 1:78-79).
And isn't that what Jesus did? The sick were healed, the hungry were fed, and the blind received sight. Everywhere he went, the whole town gathered to hear his electrifying teaching—and to get his miraculous help with their pressing needs.
But even our best efforts meet a greater challenge: death. Jesus' resurrection is why we have hope that one day death will be no more. As Jesus told Martha, "I am the resurrection and the life."
This Advent, draw strength as you remember how Christ brought hope in his first coming. As we face our own challenges, our eternal hope gives us strength to steadfastly love our neighbors today.
Jesus' first coming gave us a glimpse of the Kingdom. His second coming will bring its fullness at last.
Revelation 21:4
He will wipe away every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; grief, crying, and pain will be no more, because the previous things have passed away.
When have you felt hopeless about your own circumstances or global crises?
How does your eternal hope strengthen your commitment to love others?
Prayerfully consider finding and participating in a community service project this Advent season.
