Romans is often taught as pure doctrine, a collection of fascinating, but entirely intellectual arguments. But it's about far more: it's about how God is for us. As you and a friend (or small group) go through this journey, you'll experience a God who justifies the ungodly, gives peace to his enemies, frees his people from sin, and gives us his Spirit. It's not about knowing all the right information but becoming like Jesus together. The gift of Romans is not only how we experience God, but how God forms us all—Jews and Gentiles, men and women, the strong and the weak—to become one people who gladly participate in God's purposes.

Romans 1

A few years before Jesus was born, in the town of Priene in Asia Minor, an inscription was carved into stone. It celebrated the Roman emperor Augustus's birthday, declaring, "the birthday of the god was for the world the beginning of the joyful messages...which have gone forth because of him." Rome itself was filled with the emperor's servants, who were often called "slaves of Caesar." To us, slave is never an honorable title. But those who represented the greatest ruler in their world often had it inscribed on their tombstones.
