12 friends have opened a study shared with them.
At the first managers' meeting of the year at RZIM's global headquarters in 2019, I gave a presentation called "The Fearless Organization." As we sat under a massive glass chandelier in the ornate executive dining room, I shared, "If our behavior creates fear in people's hearts, we are doing the opposite of what God has done to us. And John goes so far as to say that this is an indication that we do not have genuine faith in God." Little could I have guessed that two years later, I'd resign because of how people in that room had bullied me. Fear is the opposite of God's mission.
John 20:19-23
When it was evening on that first day of the week, the disciples were gathered together with the doors locked because they feared the Jews. Jesus came, stood among them, and said to them, "Peace be with you." Having said this, he showed them his hands and his side. So the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, I also send you." After saying this, he breathed on them and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained."
Mary was overcome with grief. But after Jesus appeared to her, she told the disciples, her brothers in Christ, "I have seen the Lord!" Now, as the dim light from oil lamps flickers against a heavy wooden bar fitted into iron rings on the doorframe, the disciples are quietly finishing their evening meal. Perhaps they hush each other whenever they hear the loud voices of Temple guards walking outside. Peter and John have seen the empty tomb for themselves, but they're still scared. They suspect the authorities might want to punish them for grave robbery, or even worse, blasphemy. But their best attempts to barricade themselves in fall short: Jesus stands among them. He doesn't give them a lecture; he shows them his body. His scars prove he died, but they also make it clear that rejection, pain, and death no longer have the final word. Just as God breathed life into Adam and Eve, Jesus breathes new life into his disciples: 'May my peace be with you.' His actions emphasize that he is with them forever. His presence gives them a new identity and a mission. Like Mary, they are overjoyed. But knowing their fear will not be easily displaced, Jesus repeats himself for emphasis. Again, he says, "Peace be with you." At least three times, he tells them to imitate him. The Father sent him; now he sends them. He ministered by the Spirit; now he breathes the Spirit on them. He announced forgiveness to anyone who believed; now they will echo his message. Yet for at least the next week, the disciples will keep hiding in this room.
Why did Jesus show them his scars?
When has fear kept you from doing something Jesus would have done?
If you were certain Jesus had sent you to share good news, what's one thing you would do differently?
Bring your honest fears out of hiding. Tell God what keeps you from telling others about Jesus. When you're done praying, reach out to a friend and ask them to pray that you would know God's peace.
