"You're lying. I don't trust you." My co-worker's accusation felt worse than getting punched in the face. I knew I was telling the truth. But how could I prove it when she'd already decided that I was a liar?
John 8:52-59
Then the Jews said, "Now we know you have a demon. Abraham died and so did the prophets. You say, 'If anyone keeps my word, he will never taste death.' Are you greater than our father Abraham who died? And the prophets died. Who do you claim to be?" "If I glorify myself," Jesus answered, "my glory is nothing. My Father—about whom you say, 'He is our God'—he is the one who glorifies me. You do not know him, but I know him. If I were to say I don't know him, I would be a liar like you. But I do know him, and I keep his word. Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day; he saw it and was glad." The Jews replied, "You aren't fifty years old yet, and you've seen Abraham?" Jesus said to them, "Truly I tell you, before Abraham was, I am." So they picked up stones to throw at him. But Jesus was hidden and went out of the temple.
The Feast of Tabernacles was simply known as "The Feast." At the end of the fall harvest, everyone wanted to celebrate together and thank God. It was the most joyful and important gathering of the year. Jesus showed up to answer their prayers and fulfill their dreams. They asked for water; he offered living water. When they lit torches to light the city, he called himself the light of the world. They were desperate for freedom, and he said he could liberate them with the gift of eternal life. But no matter how clearly he explained himself, they hurl the most intense accusation possible: you are demon-possessed. From God's perspective, the claim is absurd. Jesus has no need to glorify himself, because the Father already handles that. I remember agonizing over when I could tell my girlfriend (now wife) my secrets. I didn't know if she would still want to date me if she knew the worst about me. And she loved me. Jesus is standing in front of people who want to destroy him, and he still tells them who he is. He knows they revere Abraham's faith. So he explains that he is the God that Abraham worshipped. He uses the holiest of divine names and simply says, "I am." That's the breaking point. The crowd picks up leftover stones from the rebuilding of the Temple to stone Jesus. They are saying to the I Am, "We want to eliminate you." Then, after fully revealing himself, Jesus is hidden. After showing up, he leaves the temple, the place built for God's presence. The most beloved center of worship is desecrated. It's the unholy place where God's people attempt to kill God. Jesus left the temple because they rejected him. But soon, he will return to the cross, because he refused to reject them.
What kept the crowd from recognizing Jesus as God?
How have you seen what should be holy used for evil?
Where in your life might you be resisting what God is saying to you?
Set a five-minute timer. Then, ask God, "What's the main way I resist knowing you and loving you?" Sit in silence, and allow him to show you the path forward. When you're done praying, text a friend what you experienced.
