Day 3: Exuberant Joy
Wholehearted delight in God's presence
Teaching
Psalm 16 expresses the heartfelt joy of a man totally devoted to God.
David expresses his exclusive loyalty to God and those who faithfully worship the Lord. He sees and despises idolatry.
David's greatest joy is the Lord, who he calls his portion and his cup of blessing. He humbly acknowledges that God abundantly provides for him night and day, with good circumstances and deep wisdom.
David knows that he can trust God with his future, even beyond the grave. So, as he meditates on God's goodness and generosity, his "whole being" rejoices in God's presence.
Advent is a season for remembering that God has come even nearer to us:
- David anticipated the Messiah's arrival; we live in light of his coming.
- David enjoyed God's presence at the Temple; now, the Holy Spirit has made us the Temple of God.
- David hoped that God would not abandon him to Sheol; we trust in Jesus' resurrection (see how the Apostle Paul quotes Psalm 16 in Acts 2:25-28).
What is the foundation of a delight in God that fills our bodies and souls?
Jesus explained that it is the pure in heart who see God (Matthew 5:8). Is there any sin or idolatry in your life? Whatever it offers you, the price is high: your joy.
Advent is an invitation to recommit our entire lives to God. When we enjoy a confident faith in God's goodness and care, God doubles our happiness as we rejoice in his presence.
Scripture
Psalm 16:9-11
Therefore my heart is glad and my whole being rejoices; my body also rests securely. For you will not abandon me to Sheol; you will not allow your faithful one to see decay. You reveal the path of life to me; in your presence is abundant joy; at your right hand are eternal pleasures.
