My cross-country teammate leaned back in his chair and said, "I'll believe in God if he reveals himself to me." We were sitting in the Lynx Lair at Rhodes College, and I believed him. It seemed he genuinely wanted to know God. But his comment left me stumped. If God loves us, why is he so hard to find? Why doesn't God want more people to know him?
John 8:42-51
Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love me, because I came from God and I am here. For I didn't come on my own, but he sent me. "Why don't you understand what I say? Because you cannot listen to my word. You are of your father the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he tells a lie, he speaks from his own nature, because he is a liar and the father of lies. "Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe me. Who among you can convict me of sin? If I tell the truth, why don't you believe me? The one who is from God listens to God's words. This is why you don't listen, because you are not from God." The Jews responded to him, "Aren't we right in saying that you're a Samaritan and have a demon?" "I do not have a demon," Jesus answered. "On the contrary, I honor my Father and you dishonor me. I do not seek my own glory; there is one who seeks it and judges. Truly I tell you, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death."
Jesus is talking to people who believe in him. They've got the WWJD bracelet. They're in. Our expectations are set: Jesus will celebrate their profession of faith. But no. Jesus is unimpressed. He flatly denies that God is their Father and states they cannot listen to God's word. Then he names their true Father: the devil, who is so full of lies that deception is his native language. Abraham Lincoln once told a woman pleading for her Confederate husband's release, "The religion that sets men to rebel and fight against their government, because, as they think, that government does not sufficiently help some men to eat their bread on the sweat of other men's faces, is not the sort of religion upon which people can get to heaven!" To a Southerner whose family was already humiliated by the Union forces, Lincoln was saying, "Your religion is worthless. It's made you evil." My ancestors fought in the Civil War. I know this stung. We don't know how that woman might have cursed Lincoln on the way home, but we know how these 'believers' responded. They call him a Samaritan. Then they go lower, "No, you're the one with the devil!" These are the most vicious, cutting insults they can devise. Why can't they believe? Jesus is devastating: "It's because I'm telling you the truth." When lies become our native language, we can't translate the truth. It's like a language we've never heard before. Instead of wondering if we need to humbly hear what God is saying, we reject his speech as unintelligible. Instead of receiving truth as a gift, we hear it as a threat. My friend said he would believe if God showed up. But when God was surrounded by a crowd of believers, they couldn't recognize him. But Jesus doesn't retaliate. Instead, to a crowd that wanted to kill him, he offered life: "If anyone keeps my word, he will never see death."
Does it feel unfair to blame people who say they want to believe, but haven't seen God?
Where did you feel the most resistance reading this?
Jesus offers life to people who reject him. What does this tell you about his willingness to show up?
Ask your friend: "Is there something true about me that I might not want to hear?" Then just listen without defending yourself.
