I visualized myself as being toxic, like a radioactive substance hidden in a glass test tube. Who would want to be associated with an unemployed whistleblower?
John 17:20-26
"I pray not only for these, but also for those who believe in me through their word. May they all be one, as you, Father, are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us, so that the world may believe you sent me. I have given them the glory you have given me, so that they may be one as we are one. I am in them and you are in me, so that they may be made completely one, that the world may know you have sent me and have loved them as you have loved me. "Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, so that they will see my glory, which you have given me because you loved me before the world's foundation. Righteous Father, the world has not known you. However, I have known you, and they have known that you sent me. I made your name known to them and will continue to make it known, so that the love you have loved me with may be in them and I may be in them."
A patriotic, religious zealot and a tax collector who oppressed his own people aren't natural friends. By the time John writes his gospel, the disciples of Jesus include women and men, Jews and Gentiles, and slaves and free citizens. Jesus' prayer explains why. The disciples had never heard anyone pray like this. Their rabbi is talking to God as God, revealing that he has always been one with God, filled with the Father's love even as his love is given to the Father. Jesus recalls that before Creation, he inhabited the glory of God, and he's sharing it with us. This prayer has been reduced to a flowing script on a bathroom tea towel. But he's the Son of God uniting his people to the forever love of the Father and the Son. This unbreakable union with the triune God is what makes zealots and tax collectors inexplicable brothers. "Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am." Jesus isn't managing a movement. He wants us close. But before they become one, Jesus' body will be broken, and his disciples will flee in shame. Moments later, Judas will bring an armed guard to arrest him. Nearly two thousand years later, I was surprised that my friends would want to start Uncommon Pursuit with me. None of us knew we'd encourage Christians from Singapore, the Philippines, South Africa, India, the United Kingdom, and Nigeria. Our zoom calls reveal a kaleidoscope of believers. Together, the unity of God's global people declares to everyone who sees it: Jesus is alive.
