A practical process for preparing to share the resurrection with friends.
Are you ready to talk about Easter?
In 2024, I led a workshop at church for a Sunday community called "From Christ to Conversation." I heard it was motivating and empowering for participants, so I'm sharing the same process with you.
Here are the steps:
1. Select a Bible verse on the resurrection. We started by selecting a Bible verse related to the Resurrection.
2. Identify the 'Big Idea' of the Biblical passage. Then, we each individually studied this passage. The goal was to get to the 'big idea' of the passage: a one-sentence summary of the text. For instance: Because of the resurrection, we have purpose. Big ideas point to transformative realities. The point is to encounter the living God and his active love.
3. Internalize this idea in your heart. After we know what God is teaching us, we need to ask how this changes us. One way of asking this question? "What need is God meeting?" For instance: Without a purpose in life, I feel empty.
4. Compassionate care for a friend. After identifying the one big idea and the one need from the Scriptures, we asked God to show us one friend who had a similar struggle. We wrote their names down.
5. Genuine curiosity Sometimes, we ask questions to control a conversation. Instead, we want first to be curious and then ask a question that reveals our curiosity. The test of a genuine question? You're interested in listening to their answer.
6. Honest stories Next, we wrote down a story of how God has helped us with this challenge. Stories are about change. I cautioned against telling invulnerable stories or hyped stories. Instead, tell vulnerable stories where you aren't trying to craft an image but share your heart.
7. Organizing our thoughts After going through the process, we started from the place of love: thinking about our friend. - My friend's name: - My friend's need: - My curious question: - My honest story: - My Biblical basis: - My next step:
May God work in our hearts through this process, and change who we are - so that we can love our friends without any strings attached.
What Bible verse on the resurrection resonates with you? What is its 'big idea'?
What need is God meeting through the resurrection in your life?
Who is one friend you could share the resurrection with? What curious question could you ask them?
What honest story could you share about how God has helped you?
