Discovering that God has provided a map (His Word) and a guide (Himself) to help us know Him.
We are lost in the woods. But thank God… God is not lost in the woods.
As we read in Psalm 33:13-15, "The LORD looks down from heaven; he sees all the children of man; from where he sits enthroned he looks out on all the inhabitants of the earth, he who fashions the hearts of them all and observes all their deeds."
We see here two important truths about God:
First, God sees our hearts and our deeds. He knows how much help we need.
Now, if you could see everything that goes on in the human heart, what would be your reaction?
But here's the second truth. We read in verse 20 of the same Psalm: "Our soul waits for the LORD; he is our help and our shield."
Remarkably, though he sees it all, God loves us.
Based on these two truths - God's omniscience and God's love - God wants to help us know him.
As the theologian Herman Bavinck writes, "How can we know God? Because God has revealed himself."
We are not in a position, by ourselves, to know God. But God is in a position to help us know God.
So… how has God revealed himself? One thing God has done is provide a map. Our destination is to encounter God. That's where we want to end up. And God shows us how in the Bible.
Hebrews 4 teaches, "For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart."
Psalm 119 says, "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path."
God's Word reveals where we are by exposing the thoughts and intentions of our hearts. It also shows us where to go, acting as a light for the path we need to walk. Ultimately, God's Word enables us to reach our destination, guiding us to make God our First Love.
So throughout First Love, we are going to depend upon God's Word to know God.
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
