Discovering the benefits of knowing God as the Lord of our lives.
Imagine entering the office one day and hearing - you have a new boss. He'll be in later, and he'd like to get an update on your work. Be prepared, we'll see you at 2 pm.
When you hear this news, what are you feeling? I guess it depends on how things were going with your last boss! Are you happy to have a new boss? Feeling anxious? Maybe afraid?
One small change - a new boss at work - can have profound ramifications. It might affect your sleep, your health, your career.
When we think about the idea of authority - of being in submission to someone else, even at work - it can be pretty uncomfortable.
So before we got to a week that focused on how our First Love is the Lord of our lives, The Great Authority to whom we are to be obedient, I wanted to make sure we understood the character of our First Love.
In the past two weeks, we marveled at God, our Savior. We studied the lengths our Triune God has gone to in order to save us - and the benefits he has provided in our salvation.
I hope this provides a context for us to hear, not just as good news, but as delightful news, that our Triune God is the Lord.
There are so many benefits to knowing God as Lord:
As Bob Dylan crooned:
But you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes > Indeed you're gonna have to serve somebody > Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord > But you're gonna have to serve somebody
Our First Love, we know we have to serve someone.
But we want to serve ourselves.
We want to be in charge of our lives.
We want to do what pleases us.
Oh God, we need help. Please reveal to our hearts and minds what good news it is that you are our Lord.
In Christ's name, Amen
