Why doctrine matters for authentic Christian community.
"'What is truth?' retorted Pilate."
Truth is contested.
You know, doctrinal statements can seem boring... until a cult comes along!
Then it is incredibly helpful to know what you believe, how those beliefs are connected to the historic, orthodox church, and where your beliefs are grounded in the Scriptures.
After all, how do you know that a teaching will help you follow the living God and not someone else? You deserve to know where things stand.
First, we affirm the Nicene Creed. The Nicene Creed is an ancient and widely accepted statement of Christian orthodoxy. We profess classical Christian theism.
Second, we celebrate The Cape Town Commitment. This is a theological confession published by The Lausanne Movement, a global movement of evangelicals. It represents the voices of global evangelicalism.
You'll notice that these confessions don't discuss predestination vs. free will, the scientific validity of macroevolution, or the correct interpretation of Revelation. Yes, we can explore some of these topics, but when we do so, our goal is not to "win an argument" but rather to have a great conversation.
The purpose of any dialogue on secondary or tertiary doctrines is to understand different perspectives better, develop our ability to explain how we understand the Scriptures and the world. We are building a global community of brothers and sisters in Christ who love one another in our differences.
But wait. There's another reason doctrine matters. Doctrine isn't only a summary of what the Scriptures teach. It is also a response to the big questions of our hearts and cultures.
We live in a complicated world; statements like The Nicene Creed and The Cape Town Commitment show us how to navigate it faithfully.
"You are a king then?" Pilate asked. "You say that I'm a king," Jesus replied. "I was born for this, and I have come into the world for this: to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice." "What is truth?" said Pilate.
Why do you think doctrine matters for the Christian life?
How do you handle disagreements on secondary doctrines with other Christians?
