Recognizing that God is completely self-sufficient and we are entirely dependent on Him.
Because God is the Creator, he is also the Source of all things.
Psalm 50 helps us see this. The Lord speaks and says:
"For every beast of the forest is mine, the cattle on a thousand hills. I know all the birds of the hills, and all that moves in the field is mine. If I were hungry, I would not tell you, for the world and its fullness are mine."
This idea that God needs us is false.
God is sufficient and happy within himself. He is a Triune God, not a lonely god who needs some friends, or a demigod who is jostling for supremacy with the other demigods.
In America, where I live, one of the greatest desires is to be self-sufficient. There is a part of that desire which is good - to be responsible, to have extra to share with others, to be generous.
Because God is the Creator, what we need to reckon with is that dependence is our primary reality. We can delude ourselves and imagine that we are independent and self-sustaining. But God is the Creator and we are entirely and always dependent upon him. For everything!
For every beast of the forest is mine, the cattle on a thousand hills. I know all the birds of the hills, and all that moves in the field is mine. If I were hungry, I would not tell you, for the world and its fullness are mine.
In what areas of your life do you struggle most with recognizing your complete dependence on God?
Can you recall a time when God provided for you in an unexpected way, showing Himself to be the ultimate Source of what you needed? How did that experience impact your faith?
In your own words, what do you think it means that 'dependence is our primary reality' in relation to God? What emotions come up for you when you really sit with that truth?
This week, practice acknowledging your dependence on God throughout the day—for your breath, your food, your relationships, your work.
